I don't think I've ever met someone who was really interested in music but also had nothing but ****ty, unrefined tastes. Interest and knowledge end up going hand in hand, given enough time. So if some person really is serious about music, I'd expect their rec's to be worth at least checking out if I had the time.
Realistically, you don't always have time, so you have to sort - but that's a given.
EDIT: Power metal is fine. I need to get more into that, if anything.
