The thing I've observed over and over in others' relationships (at least the couples I've known and also my own) is, basically, one person becoming totally complacent and lazy (in all ways) after 6 months or so while the other person continuously anticipates their boyfriend/girlfriend's needs and bends over backward for them. And any attempt to communicate and make things more balanced will result in a few weeks or so of improvement and then back to square one. :/
edit: Makes me think of that Ursula K. Le Guin quote-- "Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new."
