Into The Wild guy. Basically, the hermit life is miserable, imo, even before you get sick or have an accident, at which point it turns into hell.
Communes also have a pretty high failure rate: long ago I read a compendium about American communes from about 1850 to the hippy era and every one, sad to say, succumbed to one or more of the following:-
+ economic hardship
+ leaders going off the rails and becoming abusive
+ internecine rivalries and factional disputes
Sorry to pour cold water on an idealistic scheme, but if u want my advice, I'd suggest you take a holiday in which you can at least experiment with some of the things you have in mind before making any kind of commitment.
