As a courtesy to potential listeners I like to point to a tradition that the music has grown out of when reviewing free jazz. The effects bring to mind Bitches Brew and what Colin Stetson accomplishes organically. This is not the type of jazz that rearranges the sounds of the predecessors. This guy has mad chops but he uses them to take you somewhere further. With how much free jazz revivalism that’s been going on the oxymoronic traditionalist avant-garde would probably serve him better commercially but he’d apparently rather jam the **** out with his own echoes and that’s what he does on this outstanding release. He blasts out these Brötzmannlike runs and then before it’s even over he’s smearing it all over the sonic landscape. 5/5.
