It's called math rock because the precise complexity of the music is almost mathematic, building up multiple layers to compose a explosive climax.... It's origins can be traced back to both 70s progressive rock and 80s post punk.
King Crimson are like proto-math rock.
Don Caballero rule... Polvo are also good... Two math rock bands worth checking out.
