You may need some intellectual muscles to tackle the Colin Wilson book! If the cold, distant attitude of his "heroes" is unappealing, then William Trevor's stories should be an antidote: they should leave you feeling warm and fuzzy, if a little sad.
Eyeless in Gaza is the only one of the books I have here at home; if you let me know when you start it, I'd genuinely enjoy reading it along with you at the same time.

Lisna, thanks so much for the tips re: Wilson vs. Trevor. I may begin with Trevor before Wilson as "warm and fuzzy, if a little sad" is more my line - you've actually intrigued me with that description!
I'll definitely let you know when I start
Eyeless; it'll be nice to read that simultaneously and have the benefit of your thoughts. I'm currently about a third of the way through
Middlemarch (thanks, Marie), so still a long way to go - but perhaps I can do some overlap reading.
