The US government has continually balked at releasing many of these papers in the "interest of national security". What could realistically be contained in these papers that compromise national security? Is that really just code for "makes our intelligence agencies look terrible/evil"?

JFK was killed by accidental fire by one of his secret servicemen. The US doesn't want that on public record so they're holding stuff back. You'll find official accounts of how the secret service men that day were overworked and also partied the night before. Their nerves were shot (no pun intended). When Oswald started shooting, they panicked and returned fire because they didn't know where the shots were coming from and one of them hit the president.
