The most usual way of begging here is for people to come up to your car when it's at a stop light. What's unlucky for this type of begging is just how difficult it is to get a coin out of your pocket when you're sitting down with a seatbelt on. TBH, I almost never try any longer.
As for shops, many chain stores have a "rounding up" scheme, connected to a charity organisation. If the total is $19.50, you hand over $20 and they ask if you want to donate the 50c to charity - it's usually something about orphans, with a photo by the till to prove it's legit. You say "Yes," or risk looking like the meanest person in the world. At the end of the day all those excess cents are credited to the charity I presume.
