this is where originality (or lack of) comes in.
just because "music has sucked for the past few decades", it doesnt mean you have to adhere to those "sucky" standards. if anything, why would you want to?
I know what you are saying though, and I'm not disputing that the song could work. Sort of playing devil's advocate.
