Zappa is Zappa and probably not fusion. If I had to put him in a bag I would put him in rock. (except for his classical stuff)
I like lots of the ones you guys have suggested Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra etc.
Others I used to listen to are:
Alan Holdsworth
Kazumi Watinabe ("spice of life" and "spice of live too")
Bill Brufford made some interesting solo record. (compiled on a disc called "master strokes")
Uzeb (Noisy Nights)
Trilok Gurtu (great Indian/Jazz crossover)
Often fusion music sounds dated as it tends to use many flavours of the day. As a listener sometimes you have to get beyond that.
