Doomsdayer Holiday by Grails
This spiral of dark emotional depth moved me beyond words at times. I've been on an instrumental binge for a couple of years and have found a copious amount of amazing instrumental bands, but this is, by far, up there on the list. I love being proved wrong, though.

Lateralus by Tool
Yes, another dark album, but by no means depressing or somber. Tool's earlier stuff has its own characteristics of angst and bitterness, but Lateralus marks the beginning to a new concept in their writing. The emotion shifts from anger to a completely unexplainable feeling - one that can be universal, but mostly misunderstand, and sometimes not even experienced. Though most of the album promotes a wide-range of spiritual growth (for me, anyway), I recognize and identify with the angrier songs as well. I love that they don't consistently stamp out albums every year. The resting time seems like a crucial part in their music and it really shows. I can't really commit to one favorite song from this album because the lyrics are so powerful, so I'll just leave it at this:

I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired to fathom the power, to witness the beauty,
to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
to swing on the spiral
to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

Mistico by Charlie Hunter Trio
This is definitely one of those albums that grew on me after a few listens. It maybe just me a new jazz albums, but nonetheless, I enjoy this one a lot now. I'm familiar with his other projects, but this album I feel like captures a completely different spirit and time period. Although I'm too young to even know, I can't help but hear the 70's in the very first song, not to mention the entire album. With that being said, I've always been a fan of an artist who is good at taking me into another realm, into another place, another mindset with his/her work.
