It is stupid, but I think it
just manages to maintain a kind of charm. Even though it's not labeled as a comedy genre-wise (imdb says Action, Crime, Drama, Thriller), I laughed a lot during this movie because it was funny and over the top. If the "comedy" hadn't worked, then I don't think I personally would have liked it.
It's easy to imagine how this could become an unfunny action mess or become too silly and embarassing. I think it manages to balance nicely between those two so it just works. I haven't seen the second one, but I think I'll give it a shot.
