Closing Time is one of the better debut albums I've heard. It is stylistically different from his later albums, including those just three or four years later. But I wouldn't consider it a poor album; he exposes an emotional side which he never fully returned to in later years.

If you want to get a full measure of the man listen to his albums born during transitional periods-- Blue Valentine, Swordfishtrombones, Bone Machine, etc.
