If you want to get a full measure of the man listen to his albums born during transitional periods-- Blue Valentine, Swordfishtrombones, Bone Machine, etc.

Good recommendations. I'm not as big a fan of
Swordfishtrombones as lot of people but it doesn't sound like any of his other albums and it's probably his most transitional album so it certainly worth a listen for people new to his music.
