They are a very influential band, even if most of the music they have spawned isn't necessarily good. But Tool is awesome, so who cares? They are clearly skilled musicians, who are very creative and bring a lot to the table outside of their music.
It's okay to have a modern alt-metal band in the MB HOF!

i think one of the largest problems people have with Tool is the image which they provoke from people as this pseudo-intellectual, drug-embalmed cultural virus that stains everything in their wake. and it's easy to get disenchanted with them when their fans project such rabidly moronic philosophies.
i can imagine the measured antagonistic attitude from people here but it's really all old hat from my perspective. hating on Tool is just about as imaginative as hating on U2 -- you really don't give a s
hit about the music, but damn is their frontman annoying.
