I found that same blog a while back and had fun going through the archives. It hasn't been too active in a while though. Another site that's also been somewhat inactive but has an interesting archive is Good Music Stuff. I always check out Daytrotter, HearYa, and Laundromatinee for DLs of new artists (and some not so new). One could spend years going through the live recordings on archive.org

Son Volt is part of that whole Whiskeytown/Uncle Tupelo/Jeff Tweedy/Jay Farrar/Ryan Adams circle that some consider to be at the forefront of the Americana/No Depression movement. Wikipedia them for the family trees.

I wasn't a fan of Rapidshare either until I recently ponied up for a 30 day subscription. It was an entirely different universe - no waiting, multiple simultaneous DLs, etc. One could get really spoiled. If I ran across another site with a lot of stuff in the archives that I wanted I think I'd just pay the $6.99 (I think it was) for another month.

Savannah: are you getting over to SXSW this year?
