Red Hot Chili Peppers

"We play **** that is too funked out to get on white radio and too rocked out to get on black radio." --Flea

The Red Hot Chili Peppers original sound can best be described as a fusion of equal parts funk and punk, although they are most often placed within the realm of alternative rock. The Chili Peppers honed their sound in a burgeoning early 1980s Los Angeles alternative scene that was mostly consumed with punk rock. However, the band didn't like the idea of being restricted by the boundaries of punk, and, along with several contemporaries, chose to express themselves in a way that allowed the people at the clubs to "Get Up And Jump".
The band became renown across the country for their antics and energy onstage, along with being synonymous with drug abuse. They unleashed their radical sound to an unsuspecting country in 1984 when they were nothing more than a side project for half of their founding members. Their self-titled debut was more of an introduction than a solid body of work. Not until 1985, with the help of original guitarist Hillel Slovak and production by funk master George Clinton, would the Red Hot Chili Peppers hit their stride. Freaky Styley defined their early sound and showcased them as one of the funkiest rock bands of all-time.
It wouldn't be until their third album, The Uplift Mofo Part Plan, that all four were in the same recording studio (it would also be the only time). In the same vein as Freaky Styley, Uplift Mofo cemented the Chilis as a force within 1980s alternative rock. Then disaster struck. The death of Hillel Slovak should have derailed the band, but instead it pushed them into even further heights. Now reformed with John Frusciante as their guitarist, Mother's Milk would prove the be the album that pushed the RHCP into the mainstream. Continuing the momentum built with Mother's Milk, the Chili Peppers locked themselves into a mansion with super producer Rick Rubin and recorded Blood Sugar Sex Magik. It would be their magnum opus, receiving nearly universally positive reviews and selling at least seven million copies. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were now major contributors to the "Alternative 90s".
Frusciante left, but the band reformed with Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro for One Hot Minute. Although it's not nearly as highly regarded, it suffers from unfair expectations and is still a positive addition to their catalog. If nothing else, 'Aeroplane' is my favorite RHCP track. They would go on to release Californication and By The Way and Stadium Arcadium and blah blah blah, I don't care to write about that part of their history nearly as much. As you know, they got played on the radio a lot and sold a **** load of records.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are as much a lightning rod as they are a sacred cow here on MusicBanter. The band's specific thread was started in 2004 and has reached 89 pages and 888 posts in length. Many MB members have stated that the Red Hot Chili Peppers were their first true love and their gateway band into more interesting music. Even for posters who are not fans of their music, many interesting debates surrounding the band have taken place on these forums. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are still going (strong?) more than 25 years since they released their debut album. They are an influential, unique band known for their legendary live performances and whose sound has survived the test of time. Their quality and popularity deserve them a spot in MusicBanter's Hall of Fame.
