They weren't doing anything innovative, they didn't bring anything exciting to the table and their influence on the genre was a negative one so who cares how popular they were?
It was the 90s, Metallica was no longer the hero of Heavy Metal, Thrash was dieing and the Alternative Rock revolution was in full swing, Pantera was pretty much the only new metal band that had a big impact in the 90s.
