Yeah, I've been inundated with new music recently and haven't had enough listens to form a great impression. I've got a clear slate tomorrow so I can give it more attention then.

Alexander Tucker - Old Fog

I was unfamiliar with the term freak folk before now, and that sent me into the album with some wrong preconceptions. Freak made me think of something angry and bouncy, maybe even some punk influence. So I was actually a little disappointed on my first listen through when it was so subdued.

But whether or not freak is a good descriptor the music is great, the way the acoustic arrangements skitter along, bundling up in places and completely falling apart in others is interesting. The melodies are sparse and haunting, and the more unconventional touches, like the accordion? squalls at the end of Hag Stones work well with the mood. Tucker's voice is really perfect for the music he's creating and it all comes together excellently.

Perfect listening for late night driving.

I first heard the term a couple of years back though I have also heard it called Weird Folk. Check out say CocoRosie, Devandra Banhart and even Joanna Newsom just as a few examples. I put this album in that category. "Freak" or "weird" it is still "odd" none the less. My first freakishly, weird and odd folk album was The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter by The Incredible String Band. No one told me that it was freakishly, weird and odd even though it sounded freakishly, weird and odd.

I have never heard an Animal Collective album. They got rave reviews in all the fashionable press so I stayed away
