The Atomic Bitchwax is an old school psychedelic rock band that many would consider bordering on the psychedelic and stoner rock genres. But as we all know pinning a band down into a particular genre is at times nearly impossible. TAB was created in the mid 90’s by two guys from Monster Magnet and Godspeed. It took about four years to get out this first album, which was well worth the wait.

TAB1 is probably there heaviest psychedelic album with very minimal lyrics throughout the entire album. I have found many that get angry waiting for lyrics to show up, or something very coherent that they can sing in their head and be happy about for the rest of the day. If you are one of those people THIS ALBUM IS NOT FOR YOU. It is 100% riff driven with the very common solo thrown in almost every song. Surprisingly they have a very different approach to “stoner rock” than many of the leading bands such as Monster Magnet, Nebula, Fu Manchu, and Kyuss. First off the vocals are spread much thinner over than album, along with the absence of stop and go riffs that create tension. TAB1 really builds up momentum the entire time while being careful not to disappoint by adding in any duplicate sounding material. Secondly they have a very strong variety of sounds throughout the album. While keeping the riff driven rock sound they do not rehash the same five note bull**** over and over and over.

Personally I feel if you give this album a chance it should be heard fully and in the order in which it appears on the disc. But if you are strapped for time and really need to hear the best now then I suggest a few songs for you. Track 1, “Stork Theme” is fantastic and will surely get you interested in the album/band quite fast. Second is track 7, “Kiss the Sun” which reminds me of a few songs off Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins. If you listen to these two tracks and enjoy, then The Atomic Bitchwax is definitely for you!

It's a solid album. Not particulary original (but then what is in this genre?) but stuffed full of some tasty riffs and solo's too.
