I must agree. I do not love my Darling because he is me or even because he is like me. I love him because he is Other. He is himself, and for those qualities that define him as himself, for those I love him.

I wouldn't despise it so much had I just run across it. But I didn't. My friend forced the album on me, telling me that it was an amazingly beautiful and accurate expression of love. When I listened to it with my darling, we were both offended on behalf of Love itself. The presumption! To think that my erstwhile friend could tell the great lovers of this age what love is...and to miss the mark so far as if he shot his arrow over the house!

Exactly. It was almost diametrically opposed to Love itself. Love desires the Beloved because the Beloved is NOT himself.

Hmm, I see it differently. I consider my boyfriend my mirror because he reflects back the love I feel for him, and we become part of each other, like two people become one. There's a lot of references in music to this phenomenon. It's just one perspective though, like I said. Everyone reacts to/describes/feels love differently.

It's wholly possible that your friend related to the lyrics of Mirrors in a different way than you and I do, even. ^^

Just so I'm clear, you're describing yourself and your girlfriend as "the great lovers of this age"?

Please tell me this incident isn't the reason you're no longer friends. Because that's really dumb.

Incredible comedy from mordwyr in this thread. I just hope it was intentional.

1. She's not my girlfriend; she's my wife. My only wife. Been married 17 years. Have seven children. Yes, we are the great lovers of this age.

2. The music recommendation is not why we're no longer friends.

I liked this album. Not as good as his earlier stuff, but pretty good.
