It's not really imaginary if I've seen it happen multiple times. But you're right in the sense that anyone in their right minds wouldn't do that.

James' vocals were pretty crap, and the band were really just trying to dress a bunch of arena hard rock up in an alt rock dress, but I'd say that the songs on that album are actually pretty memorable, even if they're not to one's taste. It's been forever and a day since I've listened to Load and Reload, but I suspect that I'd take them over The Black Album any day of the week (OMFG I hate that album).

If you can look at that album objectively then I'd suggest giving Megadeth's Risk a shot. It's often seen as their lowest point, and much like Load and Reload, but I surprised myself a little while back by listening to it and absolutely loving it. Dave doesn't do diversity quite as well as Metallica, but... I don't know, his pop rock/metal just has more charm I guess.

That's why I clarified who your audience is.

"Ain't My Bitch" is a fantastic song, but I can't stand the rest of the album. The cover is atrocious as well.

Not my favorite album, but not as bad as its made out to be.

It goes on way too long, and drags at times.. but it has a few good songs. Hero of the Day is one of my favorite songs.

Wasn't the cover literally composed with blood and semen?

I think it was some animal's blood and the artist's own semen mixed together. The cover for Reload—also by the same guy—contains urine and animal blood, and that's even worse.
