Default Of Monsters And Men - My Head Is An Animal

When I first heard of this album, it was their single “Dirty Paws” back in Davenport, Iowa in 2013. I didn’t really listen to the whole album until I got to Saint Cloud, Minnesota. I like the refreshing sound of the songs on this album. It’s sort of folk-rock and that type of music was popular in the few years this album was released. This album was the band’s debut album, and every song is awesome, it does need sort of a vibe to jam with it though. Some songs are fast tempo, and some are more relaxed. “Yellow Light” from the album is one of my favorite songs of all time because of how chill it is. “My Head Is An Animal” was released in 2011 but internationally in 2012 once it topped the Icelandic charts. The album cover is even cool with how it’s just a guy on the beach.

This album was so good in my opinion that I even went down to Ragged Records in downtown Davenport to buy the vinyl. The vinyl is all pink and matches the font on the cover, I like how it’s pink and just sticks out. The Icelandic release of the album has a couple of different songs, but I downloaded those from YouTube way back when mp3’s was still a thing before Spotify. The album sold a lot of units also in many countries, plus the whole album vibes well going from track to track. Some of them on this album are fast tempo and could be considered dance music I think, just not techno dance type style of music. “Little Talks” has a great sound to it, and gives some energy to the album, along with “Mountain Sound”. Those two songs sound similar but at the same time also have distinctive differences. With the album having slower songs also, like “Yellow Light” & “Slow And Steady”, it gives off a diverse selection of songs.

The reviews for this album are interesting; Rolling Stone only gave the album 3 out of 5 stars. If I were rating on that system, I would give this album a 5 out of 5 stars. I wouldn’t choose an album to review on my blog if the album weren’t perfect. The iTunes bonus track is titled “Numb Bears” and it’s good, but I wouldn’t have chosen it to make my 7 song album but would still vibe well with the rest of the album and should be on Spotify. This album is far different then the albums the band did after it. “Beneath the skin” has harder and deeper sounding drums and then “Fever Dream” after that had a soft-rock vibe to it. ‘Sinking Man” a hidden track after “Yellow Light” isn’t on Spotify also but is on YouTube; it’s great and should have been added to the Spotify album link.

7 song album:
  • Dirty Paws
  • Mountain Sound
  • Yellow Light
  • Little Talks
  • Six Weeks
  • From Finner
  • Slow And Steady
