Yeah, that's most people...I think music lovers like us though can look at the bigger picture. It happens to me, too, though. I don't get rid of music as long as there is space on my ipod. This includes music I don't listen to anymore, but used to in my younger days. I figure every album I listened to a lot played some kind of part in my development and deserves a spot. Like Disturbed. I haven't listened to them since high school, but freshman/sophomore year I listened to them a ton so they are still on there. It gets comments all the damn time.

I regularly enjoy listening to Kiss, Motley Crue & AC/DC, 3 bands who are regularly crucified on this forum.

I don't really care if anyone thinks they're bad or don't like them or think that they are talentless, in fact I expect it because I know they are. I listen to their music wanting something that's loud, idiotic & fun. As much as I love something like Throbbing Gristle or the like they don't really cut it when you want fun rock n roll.

It's when people try to kid themselves that it's something that it isn't that bothers me.
A Kiss fanboy would annoy me far more than a Kiss hater. Even though I do like the band.

I'm going to try to answer this without writing a book. :p

The answer for me is yes and no. In the past on forums I've posted on I find myself trying to keep a neutral opinion on things before listening to them. I usually have the opposite problem that you're having. Normally things that are liked by a majority of people I tend to dislike. Its not that I want to be different from everyone else, its that people tend to over hype so many bands that you go into it expecting great and wind up a bit disappointed. I try to just do my own thing and keep other peoples opinions away from mine.

I can see how where you're coming from, but overall, I avoid this most of the time.

I guess the last two lines of Urbans post sums up what I'm trying to say. Even though I am guilty of being a fanboy myself. I don't push the musician on others though. At least I try not to.

If I took a moment and look back to the replies regarding my latest album/film purchases then I would be even more forlorn than I am now.

There comes a time when lack of replies/ negativity seems like a personal insult but it's really not like that at all. If it was then I would have stopped posting a couple of years ago.

I would love it if people loved what I listen or get why I like what I do but it rarely happens, so I deal with it much easier these days. The secret is to be true to yourself and in those late hours at night; listen to what you like regardless of opinions because after all, all art forms are completely subjective.

Urban Hatemonger is one of the very few members on here to be constantly seeking obscure bands or new sounds yet he is perfectly at ease talking about some of the most unfashionable bands out there because that's what he thrives on. This example should be adopted by all. We both like some of the most archaic bands out there but there is no apology for this. Why should there be?

If people diss on old songs which I know what the OP is pertaining to then so what? it's all opinion at the end of the day and some of us may have heard a particular song a hundred times more (literally!) because of our age but it should be noted that said songs are not actually referred to as Crap etc. It's just an over familiarisation on our part.

Can't really say it's polluted it, more like, helped me evolve. I mean, I still listen to MCR now and again, no matter how bad of a rep they get. And I honestly don't really care who think APC and Tool are mediocre when I find them fantastic. Don't really care much for the bad rep that skramz and post-rock get either, but all in all, I've definitely matured musically here, and for that, I'm grateful.

But is it actually "musical maturation" or just adopting the opinions of others? I often wonder if I would like some artists I discover here had I simply discovered them on my own.

I think it's maturation to figure out that you like certain things based on what they mean to you instead of what they mean to someone else.
I think that's what is meant by it.

But at the same time, you can't really force yourself to like what you don't fancy in the first place. Doesn't make much sense really. Plus, I can't really view learning about new, good music as such a bad thing anyways.

It's becoming more musically mature. There's so many albums I've listened to and dismissed, Velvet Underground & Nico being the one that immediately springs to mind. I consider it a favourite album now, I love it.

I think if you listen to something enough, it will grow on you to the point of saying yeah, I like it.

But for you to actually LOVE it, is a different matter.

I remember recently, I listened to an album I disliked months ago. It just didn't appeal to me for some reason, I listened to it again and I liked it.

I think you can adopt other people's opinions to an extent, by tolerating certain albums/bands and saying you like it... when you're not particularly keen. But that's about it.
