I don't know why it's so hard for some people to believe that other people listen to good music.

Didn't say it they weren't good. I don't mind Trout Mask Replica.

I just don't feel the need to hear it that often.

For me both are great records, but i feel TMR edges it. Both reside in my record collection, never saw the Velvets, just Lou Reed, and saw the Captain just the once.

Von Vliet and Nico are on equal footing with me as having voices that make me want to gouge my eyes out with a grapefruit spoon. [...]& Nico has the advantage as an album of having songs where she is not featured.

That description is unpleasantly graphic, SATCHMO. Promise me you´ll lock up all your spoons before you click on this :-

What can I say? That was just badass. Definitely enough to make me cast my vote for Team Beefheart.

I did lock up all the silverware beforehand though.

Voting for trout mask replica is the 'official' thing to vote for. But come on people, its just a bunch of tripe. VU&Nico is songwriting 101, text book music.

^ I´m happy to see that with your help, presumably, "Team Beefheart" is winning the poll at the moment. Beefheart´s narrow lead seems to be upsetting somebody, though :-

Sorry to be argumentative, Thinkofthechildren, but I would like to dispute a couple of things you said:-

(i) at least you opted to put inverted commas around the word "official", because of course there´s no such thing in this case. There´s no coersion; you don´t even have to admit who you voted for if you don´t want to.

(ii) plenty of posts here indicate that plenty of people don´t consider Trout Mask "a bunch of tripe". Maybe it has some virtues that you are overlooking.

(iii)"VU&Nico is songwriting 101, text book music." Not entirely sure what you mean by this and not entirely convinced that it´s a good thing for an album to be.

Sure trout mask is more avant garde and innovative, and VU&nico is technically generic, yet its the most unique music, lyrics, emotion and sounds you will ever hear. Everything on VU&nico has been done before it was released and after, but why is it seen as one of the bench-points of alternative music, of avant garde, when actually its neither? You can explain trout mask replica, it is groundbreaking. You cannot explain VU&Nico, which actually makes it ironically even more groundbreaking.
