Default Favorite "Planet"?

Mars, Bringer of War

Venus, Bringer of Peace

Mercury, The Winged Messenger

Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity

Saturn, Bringer of Old Age

Uranus, The Magician

Neptune, The Mystic

I love the whole suite but I would go with Neptune for the haunting choir ending, which according to stage direction were meant to be in an adjacent room, as the choir fades a door was to be slowly closed.

I like Mars. Just for the dramatic contrast. I imagine a fiery desert moon while listening. Plus the roman god of war is my idol.

In most polls on this piece, the top two would be Jupiter and Venus. I happen to know a lovely young lady that plays french horn, and Venus is her favorite because it's one of the loveliest pieces that feature that instrument...

This is a really hard one. "Mars" is of course the most popular because it's been so overused but it really is a powerful, dramatic and striking piece, and a great way to open the suite. Even better then that Venus is so gentle and laidback. Great contrast.

If I had to choose, outside of Mars, it would be Saturn or Jupiter. I love the almsot doom-metal grind of Saturn, whereas the bouncy joy running through Jupiter, not to mention the speeding-up-dance part of it is pretty amazing.

So to answer your question I don't know, but this is one of my alltime favourite classical pieces ever, right up there with Rachmaninoff's Piano concerto No. 1...

As much as I like mars, i much prefer the calmer pieces. Jupiter and Venus are the two that I love most.

Well, I'm sorry to break it to you, but if Pluto is a planet then the asteroids and comets are planets, but it's really not the point. Gustav Holst didn't compose a piece for Pluto or Earth, or any of the moons or the Sun or the corner grocery store for that matter

Pluto isn't even the largest body in the Kuiper Belt (Eris is). If it were closer to the sun it would have a comet-like tail. But again, we're talking about a work of music.
