Default J.S.Bach and Ch. Gounod "Ave Maria"

Hello,

I hope this topic wasn't mentioned before I have a question about music genre of Johann Sebastian Bach and Charles Gounod "Ave Maria". Firstly it was called " Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach", when it consisted of melody and the prelude. Later, when lyrics were added it was "Ave Maria", so probably would be an aria. So my question is - how could I describe the genre of the piece if it is instrumental? I don't think there is a genre as Meditation and I don't know if it could be called an improvisation as it is written.
