His early lofi stuff is much more noteworthy than the recent releases but it's all pretty good. Get Lonely is probably the best newer album, The Hound Chronicle the best early jank and Sunset Tree is the most accessible. Darnielle's discography is insane and slightly redundant.

That's what I enjoy about Neutral too. The Mountain Goats ARE really good, but I think Neutral's lead vocalist has a more beautiful voice.

Oh man I love the Mountain Goats. John Darnielle just amazes. I saw him perform in London a month or two ago and I was in heaven.

Sunset Tree is my fave. All Hail West Texas, and Tallahassee are definitely worth checking out too.

How do you all feel about The Life of the World to Come?

I love the Mountain Goats, I think John Darnielle is a brilliant lyricist. I tend to listen to them in huge bunches for a short period of time, then come back to then a few months later and remember how fantastic he is. For a while I just had stuff like the Sunset Tree, Heretic Pride, and Life of the World to Come, however I just recently got his earlier discography, which i find fantastic, especially Zopolite Machine and Nine Black Poppies.
Favorite album. All Hail West Texas, favorite songs in no order: No Children, Cubs In Five, Color In Your Cheeks, Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton, This Year, Going To Georgia.

You need to hear Sweden - it's been my favorite of his ever since it was released. He was in a dark place when he made it but his charming attention deficit hyperactivity disorder style shines through.

Fantastic band, I have everything (I think) from 'The Coroner's Gambit' onwards, apart from the latest one. Prior to that, just the 'Nine Black Poppies' EP so far. That alone is the best part of 10 records but it's still only scratching the surface, isn't it?!

My fave is 'We Shall All Be Healed', slightly fuller band sound there, just his best collection of songs I think. 'Against Pollution' is genius.

2nd place 'The Sunset Tree' probably.

Fabulous lyricist.

Yeah I want that one, might make that one my next. Not easy to get hold of though, I suspect.

I've actually only listened to Cotton, and that's because it was featured on Weeds seasons ago. I think its really good though, i'll just have to give the other stuff a listen.
