I studied spanish at college. Ok, I used what I learned for my song Te Quiero, but, except this, I don't exactly know spanish music. I like spanish guitar performances, but I can't say I'm an expert in spanish music.

Ok, what I want to tell you is that we should separate music translated in spanish from specific spanish styles.

Mine are

Zoe= great alternative band they have a spacey david bowie vibe to them imo

Babasonicos= i can only describe them as a creative pop rock band with sexual lyrics..
almost all their songs are about girls and sex.

Los tres= Very creative and tight as a band, they are good musicians who experiment with classic Rock n roll, Alternative and other genres

I recently finished a very interesting book on the various forms and development of Cumbia. It is mostly an academic look at the development and social contributions of the genre, but it also includes plenty of interesting looks into everything from how instrumentation, lyrics, and performance styles have contributed to the many forms of the genre. It is a book of individual essays all tied together by the common thread of Cumbia / Edited by Hector Fernandez L'Hoeste and Pablo Vila.

Hi everybody, I live in the South of Spain, and follow the music scene here in Andalucia.
The region boasts a great number of bands and artists representing every genre imaginary, but a big factor in much of the music here is a particular Andalucian flavour which runs through the music whether it be heavy metal, jazz, folk, soul, rap or funk. In many tracks you can also detect a hint of the east reflecting the regions 800 years of Moorish influence among others.
Another interesting fact is that many bands write and perform in English despite having all Spanish lineups, depending on which market they are aiming at.
I'd like to use this forum over the coming months to give you the heads up on some great bands (at least I think they are) and would welcome your opinions and feedback:

That's already done, actually. There are two different threads:

1. Spanish music (this one)
2. Spanish-language music

To avoid misunderstandings, perhaps we should title this thread, "Music from Spain".

That'd be a good idea as there's more to the music of Spain than Flamenco and Europop, and there's a lot of good music made in Spain that's sung in other languages than Spanish.

Exactly. As we said before, Galician, Catalan and Basque languages, mainly. Also, there is an unknown part of the music from Spain that deserves to be mentioned too: Songs in English. There are many "hidden gems", really.

As early as the 60's, we have two good examples: Los Iberos and Los Bravos.



Or, in the 90's and 2000's, indie bands such as Sexy Sadie, Sidonie, Cycle and Cancer Moon, among others:

Very true, not forgetting a thriving music scene in Gibraltar which spawned the likes of Breed77, Melon Diesel and their spin off Taxi, and current bands such as Metro Motel, Orange Peel, and so on...
