I put it badly, but what I meant is that the general structure, aims, sonic embellishments and other such elements within his music are very much comparable to those found in a lot of other music that is routinely classified as indie.

Sufjan Stevens is a typical indie/alternative artist. He isn't folk, though his music could be classified as 'folky'. Essentially, though, it fits conveniently within the ambit of indie pop.

in fact, one of the things that stopped me listening to sufjan stevens until now is the point that i thought it was folk indie, translate: miserable git sits with guitar and sings about how the world has done him over. had I known that it was more within the realms of pop, i'd have paid attention to him as far back as 2006. well...suppose i can only blame the fans, for putting across the strange notion that this guy is a folk artist.

Haven't heard enough from him to make a proper judgement. I downloaded his first album, A Sun Came, and it was rather inconsistent. I loved some of the songs and lots of the others were boring. What album should I be looking at next?

Also, this song is killer and well-synced to an awesome movie, so bonus points:

Sufjan sways to both sides of the spectrum for me. Sometimes he writes songs that are undeniably indie-like (You are the Blood anyone? Granted, he only arranged it), but other times, he leans more towards folk (Michigan was more or less folk--Romulus being my favorite song off the album) He's great though. Very creative, and his lyrics always tend to be very well thought out and written.

He's been avoiding the real world lately; however with his Sci-fi writing apparently. I keep hearing he's working on an album or that the previous mentioned statement is a lie. I'd also like to hear about a new album.
