^ Maybe the first is true, I don't know - but I'm pretty sure it's not connected to the second. Communists in Russia felt the need for their system to be global because their success was a direct threat to the existing notion of the divine right of kings. Therefore, the thinking went, Russia would sooner or later be attacked by the European monarchies. None of that applies to a modern American commune. If you find that Jerry Richards book, you'll see that American communes don't try to be global, and that their failures can be attributed to other causes. (Most commonly, internal squabbling.)
