I was born there. The only benefit I got out of it is dual citizenship which is handy. I've never had a negative experience in Detroit but it's boring as f*ck compared to Toronto.

Detroit has collapsed economically and has shrunk dramatically in population in the past few decades. I've never been there but from what I understand from friends who've lived there is that, as a result, downtown and assorted other parts of the city are pretty lifeless, but it also has a lot of rough neighborhoods farther out that are, as you say, very dangerous.

Windsor, just on the other side of the Detroit river, is getting pretty downtrodden too from what I've heard, mostly from job losses in the auto industry in recent years. It's a smaller town, and the majority of people who live there are either students at the university or they work for Chrysler. I heard the Chrysler Assembly plant there (they make all the vans) is hiring again so that will be good for the town.

Yeah the Detroit suburbs are pretty rough. Unless you live in Bloomfield Hills, of course.

I will say that on the news, the vast majority of gun-related and crack/meth/heroin related crime is linked to John Doe, originally from Detroit. I would like to think that Detroit has improved and just pushed said drug lord out, but I am doubtful. I think it's just the Detroit drug lords with dreams of expansion that hit my region up. Mostly with crack and heroin, but occasionally meth or prescription pills.
