From “emaciated” refugees to crops burned on the brink of harvest, starvation threatens the survivors of more than two months of fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

The first humanitarian workers to arrive after pleading with the Ethiopian government for access describe weakened children dying from diarrhea after drinking from rivers. Shops were looted or depleted weeks ago. A local official told a Jan. 1 crisis meeting of government and aid workers that hungry people had asked for “a single biscuit.”

More than 4.5 million people, nearly the region’s entire population, need emergency food, participants say. At their next meeting on Jan. 8, a Tigray administrator warned that without aid, “hundreds of thousands might starve to death” and some already had, according to minutes obtained by The Associated Press.
Anyone who doesn’t think this is blood on the hands of the United States congress needs to read up on the history of arms sales in east Africa. But boohoo they had they precious “temple to democracy” raided.

Shocking new video from inside Capitol riot https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/...wsroom-vpx.cnn

Totally disturbing that that cop would call the senate chambers “sacred”

WTF?

Yes, I've noticed this for a long time: commentators talking about American democracy, its processes etc. as being "sacred". A common, but complete misuse of the word imo, because "sacred" means connected to gods and religion.
In Britain, to describe our equivalent, the Houses of Parliament, a tv commentator or a tourist guide would probably use the more accurate word, "hallowed". But in fairness to that policeman in the Senate, I suspect that in England a beat cop under pressure probably wouldn't find the word "hallowed" springing immediately to his lips either.

It’s North Korean style language and I truly believe that most North Koreans understand that it’s a falsehood perpetrated by force. In America, it’s to the core brainwashing. Patriotism and nationalism is our state religion. I’ve traveled a lot and I’ve never seen anything like it or scarier.

Yeah, it also makes me very uneasy when politicians like Mike Pence* drag their religion into politics. I remember years back, perhaps at the time of the Invasion of Iraq, George Bush made some comment about talking to God, and hearing His answer. In my book, that meant that the Pres of the US was admitting that he was, technically, insane.
Of course, compared to Trump, GWBush is a saint, sorry, no, I mean hero or model of sanity.

* And to be less partisan for once, Nancy Pelosi does it too.

In England, in a kind of jocular manner, public toilets are occasionally refered to as "Temples of Convenience". Quite how that fact is relevent to our little debate here, I'm not sure, so I'm going to fall back on Trollheart's classic phrase, "Makes you think!"

I believe the correct Trollheartism to use in that case is, indeed, "shut up that's why".
