This is a great point. "We're not at war with Islam but God IS on America's side!"

Church-themed platitudes?

I agree that a lot of the behaviour in the USA betrays the idea of secularism. In parts of the USA secularism is completely thrown away is it was in the 50s. The USA is probably one of the best countries ever at ignoring their own constitution.

And when we're talking about this whole war in the middle east topic, the President saying "God bless america" is totally redundant. (edit: isn't this Obama guy supposed to be a constitutional lawyer? Shouldn't he know better? Or does he really care?) In my view should this be a holy war? Yes. But not between christianity and islam, but between the secularist western world and a world that's being dictated by tyrants who use religion to consolidate their power.
I basically agree with Christopher Hitchens when if comes to this war.

Anyway about this Osama guy. I realize it's been a long time coming, but now that its over, what difference does it really make? Because to be honest, I don't see this as being much more than valuable symbolically. And yes the right wings are going to want to see certification and proof ect. and when they get it they'll probably even say it's photoshopped or something. But just like Obama's birth certificate, it's really not going to matter, and it's just going to be an excuse to ignore the real issues.

This was my gut on the comments here: Hate of God and Bush have now translated to hate for Obama. I think this is exactly why you should like Obama more.

Presidents are almost always defined by their predecessor in that they either draft off of him (GHWB after Reagan) or they run away from him (Carter following Reagan). Obama isn't sprinting away from Bush because he believes in a few things.

I'm sure most of you think we haven't really pulled out of Iraq even though we've got the same number of active military in Germany. No one thinks we're still "in Germany." But we have pulled out of both.

I'm sure you hate social conservatism, but Obama has always been a self-defined Christian. He isn't going to act on a Terri Schivo issue like Bush did.

Don't think because Obama isn't sprinting away from Bush that he's just Bush pt. 2.

What do you mean by "Hate of God and Bush"?

well obviously its a general term, but I mean a hatred of his (Bush) general ignorance to free-thought and his social conservatism. I didn't have time to list out all the issues.

I think most folks think Bush did 2 positive things in his presidency.

I don't know what "most folks" think, but I thought Bush 2 was an ass who did more to fuck up this country than any other president that I'm aware of. So seeing Obama doing his best impression of him certainly feels like something of a betrayal to me.

This and also: Why does Obama being a Christian make it ok for him to assume that the rest of the country wants to hear his religious rhetoric? It doesn't matter what his religion is, he should leave religion out of government in every way.

He can go to church and celebrate easter etc. but don't say "God Bless America" just because it's become a popular american slogan. The German leader likely doesn't say Heil Hitler after every speech.

Can't we just be happy? We wanted him to die, and now he's dead. I don't know. Maybe it's just me.
