Thank you, there was an 8 page debate about this last night. We should definitely have a secular nation, that doesn't mean the government has to be indifferent towards it. It's not like he was going off on a religious tangent while signing in a law or while announcing some global conflict (which is what George Dubya use to do).

I don't even care so much about what a constitution might say. It's still alienating to hear the leader of your country say certain religious things. It makes you question their reliability.


Elections are coming up in Canada, and I'm probably going to vote Conservative, but I have misgivings about a few of the people Mr. Harper has in his cabinet...

I'f he was quoting directly out of the pledge of allegiance, then that's fair enough. I think in those circumstances you need to question the pledge rather than the person.

Yeah...the problem is people aren't hearing god the same way you're hearing god. As a self-defined atheist, you've clearly reviewed the facts (I hope) and have decided against having a belief system beyond the physical world.

but for a lot of people, God doesn't mean the iron-clad patriarchy you'd think of when you think of God. To most folks its the same thing as "man" which generally refers to the species. Some will take offense claiming its leaving out women, just as some take offense that God leaves out all other religions including the non-religious. But most folks say "yeah, God. I think thats probably something more to life than just being worms in the ground" and then they move on.

There was a lot in that speech. I think most focused on the news, and what it means with regard to foreign policy. As for Ian himself, I think you're fighting a proxy way with this one. As the other argument proves, few would consider the Presidents speech religious. I'd certainly bet the religious right don't think it was religious.

Since its Spring let me make an allergy analogy (fun to say!), for people without allergic sensititivites, some pollen in the air is irrelevent. For people like myself who's face explodes when plants boom, I can tell you by counting empty Zyrtec pill cartons when Spring officially showed up.

I was wondering about that photo. Any ideas about its source?
I'm sure that when the body was taken into custody and brought, I assume, aboard an aircraft carrier, that an examination was done (along with obtaining the DNA) and photographs were taken.

As far as that photo, this blog claims that, "The real photos have not yet been released. These [the photo all over Google Images] photos are circulating now, but Defense Dept. says they are old edited photos that have been around for a while."
I haven't checked the DoD site or any other official site to verify that statement (assuming there is one), but it wouldn't be surprising if it were true, and that photo is fake.
