In customer service, I have been cursed at and expected to tend to the every need of the customer, I have been degraded and I have seen people experience racism, I have had things thrown at me and I have been reported for simply standing up for another worker.

It's degrading because people think that you are there to bow down to them, simply because you are there to help.

My pregnant best friend has been yelled at to go faster and for other things just because the customers were in a bad mood.

It's different and incomparable to those who have felt violated, but the fact that it's degrading, and that the managers simply brush your experiences away because "the customer is always right" is disgusting.

On a completely unrelated note, I believe all people should be legally obliged to spend their first three years of work in customer service, so they can learn how to treat people and appreciate those of us who are there to help them through their days.

I know someone who worked in customer service most of her life, and is still super rude to cashiers when something is not their fault.
It baffles me.

in sex work, you can turn people away.
you can say no.

at least in being a domme.

This was me (and most young people I think!) I got my first part-time job at 16 in the customer service industry and continued it through high school and university until I got my degrees and worked in my actual field. Whenever I see someone being rude to a CS representative I totally feel for them

(The customer service person, not the rude customer!)

Edit: To relate back to the original topic, I still would in no way compare it to working in the sex industry.

The initial argument wasn't really that they are the same, but rather that not all sex workers are traumatized by working in the industry!

I am in no way taking away from those who are, as their experiences are just as important.

How come it's only the "degraded" women we hear from? No one ever wants to hear our stories about how empowered we are by sex work....I feel as though some people have a sick fascination with hearing sex industry horror stories.

Well I think both are important.

But those who are empowered are seen as sexual deviants and somehow ****ed up.

Nah of course they're both important but it seems those who are telling horror stories are given more space to tell their stories rather than the empowered ones, because it's unfathomable to most people that we could actually enjoy it, they'd rather just judge us and use their stories to say "see! See! they didn't have a good time so all of it is bad!"

I think that's the way of most things in life. We're not as inclined to share positive experiences with one another as we are the negative ones. If I go to Walmart and the thing I bought works, and the guy who helped me find it wasn't a dick, I might tell one person. If he was a prick and he sold me a piece of junk, I'll tell fifteen people.

I don't think most people celebrate positive experiences more than they lament the negatives.

Probably because the title of the thread is "The Negative Effects of Porn" rather than "The Positive Effects of Porn" or even "The Effects of Porn."

I recognise though that there are stories from both sides, of empowerment, degradation, and more. I think stories of empowerment though probably only ring true for the Western world... sex work is very different in developing countries. And I'm not talking about sex trafficking, I'm still talking about sex work.
