What's the connotation involved with current usage of people outside the U.S. referring to Americans as Yankees? Is there some deeper implication other than descendants that settled here from England?

I think they generally refer to us as "yanks" not "yankees".

Yankee/Yank in the USA refers to people from New England. The British refer to everyone in the third largest, third most populous country in the world as yanks because they're jackasses who can't get over their historic attachment to a tiny ****ing portion of the country.

The british folks tend to live in the East Coast side which is where most British people went to. The Midwest region is pretty much owned by Germans, Sweedishs, Polishs, Czech people, and others.
