If I answered either of my parents with the wrong tone of voice, I was already grounded. They didn't tolerate any bullshit.

My parents never once hit me for any reason (that I remember) but they certainly delivered some soul-crushing insults from time to time.

I would rather be physically abused than mentally.

Spoiler for sort of tmi:
I've pretty much dealt with emotional abuse from most of the people I've known in my life. My ex liked to mix it up a little; he was both emotionally abusive and at times acted out his anger physically.

The external bruises heal. The ones on the inside will be there for a very, very long time. Maybe even forever. Though I imagine that everyone who has ever been a victim of physical abuse has also retained a lot of the pain even after the physical pain had gone.

There is no disconnection, and abuse is abuse but I can see where you're coming from there. I don't understand why anyone would ever abuse their children in any way. Then there's also the sort of passive abuse (i.e.; the uncaring parent) if you know what I mean.

I was beaten growing up but I wouldn't say they were savage to the point of physical abuse. I do get what you are saying though about how the two can be related to each other.

Not so sure on the passive abuse thing though. Uncaring parents is probably a form a mental abuse because their child will have issues later on in life because their parents didn't behave like parents should so it creates a lasting scar.

I do believe that children without proper direction will have a lot of problems. People who choose to have children have an enormous responsibility - it doesn't just stop at birthing, basic care, and buying **** for their kids. There is so much riding on whether or not that lifeform is going to be ok, and it's all in the parents' hand(s). Those parents are sometimes pretty ****ed up themselves, and the cycle of mental illness continues. (Which is another reason I don't want children, and I'm glad that Ki doesn't - neither of us want to pass on our terrible genetics, the things that hinder us mentally and physically - bipolar, borderline personality, late-onset schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, severe anxiety, blindness, kidney problems, family history of alzheimer's, cancer, diabetes ...)

There are just some things that are better to destroy before they have a chance to materialize in another living being. Abuse equals abuse equals abuse equals abuse....

My mother was the only one of three daughters who was abused. Her father once beat her so badly that she had to be hospitalized. Her mother was too afraid to call social services, because he probably would have beat her, too. My mother received the necessary care from specialists and thankfully never lashed out on her own children but boy, she had a nasty mouth. I'll be comforted when my grandparents are in the fucking ground. Call me heartless or whatever, but they made some poor decisions and continue to emotionally abuse my own sister (our grandparents are relentless, but at least she can avoid the negativity from my mother). I haven't spoken to either of them in years because they are truly disgusting people.

I can't tell if that's pure luck or your parents were calculated sociopaths.
