i said islamism is a political ideology, not a denomination. and really i'm just relaying information i got from wiki & other sources. i didn't make the term up nor its definition.

This thread is a good reminder of the futility of discussing things on MB.

Anyone could raise a valid point, or several of them, in a post, but they won't necessarily be the focus of future discussion. Instead, semantics probably will and so will misunderstandings, irrelevant jokery or perhaps unbased accusations from people claiming to somehow feel attacked (particularly with people like Hermione / CrazyVegn about). It's like everyone wants to control the discussion somehow (by derailing, nitpicking, attacking, performing) rather than contribute in any significant way.

That's true of ALL discussions with people not in your immediate zone of friends, unless you've managed to find some kind of Bohemian paradise of different-minded yet always respectful Norwegians.

I do realize they're rare, but I have found a very few of them, though not necessarily exclusive to norwegians or bohemians.

i agreed with your valid points, didn't really have anything to add to them. i didn't understand that one portion of your post (still don't, if i'm being honest). it's really not that big of a deal.

Fine. You had a problem understanding the following :

"The actions of these terrorists is creating more and more such associations and if it goes far enough, you can end up in a situation where islamism and the harmless things that relate to the religion remind us of fear, violence and terror."

You felt that this is a claim that islamism is harmless. To this, I write that "apples and oranges" is not the same as "apples are oranges". You didn't seem to understand what I meant by that, so I'll elaborate. What I meant, specifically, is that the following words :

"islamism and the harmless things that relate to the religion"

should not be read as :

"islamism is a harmless thing that relates to the religion"

Which seems to be something along the lines of how you read it. Instead, "islamism" and "the harmless things that relate to the religion" should be read as written and intended, as two different things as indicated by the separation with the word "and". Thus, you can get the following meanings from the above :

"The actions of these terrorists is creating more and more such associations and if it goes far enough, you can end up in a situation where islamism reminds us of fear, violence and terror."

And also :

"The actions of these terrorists is creating more and more such associations and if it goes far enough, you can end up in a situation where the harmless things that relate to the religion remind us of fear, violence and terror."

Neither of those two meanings describe islamism as harmless. It isn't my belief and it's just not the words I put in the post.

**** it. I just want to say welcome back tore! You have been missed.
And don't let this thread stand as an example of the conversations or level of debate on MB; I had to leave this because nobody agreed with my points of view (which is fine) but then started accusing me of supporting terrorism and downplaying and disgracing the sacrifices of those who died. Pointless.

But we're still talking about other stuff. Don't be driven off by this one thread. Music Banter needs someone like you.

In any event, whatever you decide, it's good to hear from you again mate.

yea, i don't understand this sentence because while the harmless aspects of islam shouldn't relate to fear, violence and terrror, to a certain extent i would say that islamism should.

you don't have to be such a condescending c*nt about it, i know what the word "and" means. it just seems out of place between islamism and the harmless aspects of the religion.

This is a thread on the internet that touches on the subjects of religion, terrorism, and freedom of speech. Of course things were going to get heated. Regardless, I think everyone in this thread so far has been pretty polite, with the most offensive thing to surface being the occasional jab at someones' interpretations and reading comprehension. Compared to the way that things are handled on other websites, I'd say that we've all been fairly civil so far. And don't be fooled by JWB and I arguing with each other; we don't really hate each other, we just like to debate about things.
