No, socialism depends on authoritarianism in order to accomplish its goals & we've seen that through history.

Like I said in the other thread, I had family members (who I knew) who were in a Nazi concentration camp (Sobibor); I don't take kindly to any sort of mass movements because I know what tends to happen when people get swept up in big ideas... the next thing you know, there are prison camps and bodies being bulldozed into ditches.

No, Leninism and its descendants like Maoism depends on authoritarianism. Those ideologies developed in agrarian peasant societies where there wasn't the developed industry prescribed by socialism to be able to come into in the first place so the Bolsheviks conceived of an authoritarian interim to mold the country into a proper industrial nation before morphing into an actual socialist "government".

Socialist thinkers never posited this authoritarian state before the Bolsheviks as far as I know. An authoritarian state would be antithetical to socialism. You sound like an anarchist who doesn't really know what anarchist socialism actually is.

How is authoritarianism antithetical to socialism when socialism is the state controlling the means of production?

I can see it being antithetical to communism but not socialism.

I'm not much for ideologies either as I don't think I've ever heard an ideology that wasn't doomed to failure and/or oppression, but anarchist socialism still has my moral support.
