I say it's a case by case thing because everyone grows up differently. Some people undergo trans...feelings(?) when they're in kindergarten while others don't experience it or come to terms with it until their late 50s. The thing is making sure that the counselor who helps determine if it's appropriate (which there definitely should be) isn't biased in either direction.

Except what if the party's helping the confused child are wrong? The only person that can make a choice with absolute certainty in a situation like that is the individual in question as an able minded adult.

I don't think I'd stoop as far to say that it's just a stupid kid, but the lack of information is a big one that people don't take into consideration. I experimented as a teenager, I thought I was gay for years, turns out I wasnt. But that's because I was stubborn and wanted to get away from the norm and hope to god that what I thought was true, was actually true.

Also, this. Depends on the culture. Certainly in a culture where it repressed and the hetero normative model is absolute, a gay person will be disgusted with their own thoughts and shove them down.

Same could be said for trans kids who face people telling them they don't know what they're talking about when they try to express their internal conflicts.

This is what I was referring to with the bias (it can also go into the other direction).

But sometimes a person with a bias can't be picked out of a crowd easily. And the most bias people can come across the most trusted worthy.

That is also true. However, I will repeat myself when I mentioned about ""it being the new cool thing." It's much easier for a child to latch onto something that everybody is doing as opposed to someone who is older that knows better than to follow the crowd. At the same time, I know my wording can seem negative, but if there are a large group of people doing something in their lives, a child that doesn't know any better has more of a tendency to latch onto it.

There's a reason the saying if everyone was jumping off a bridge would you do it is popular to be said to children. Because children have mob mentality. A perfectly good reasoning to them is, "billy did it too."
