I'm not sure I believe that as stated. Perhaps it was about smoothness of curvature, not whole shape modeling. Because when you use GPS, theres defintely an ellipsoid being modeled for coordinates, not spheres. Spherical geometry is used to approximate local surfaces on that ellipsoid, but the reference figure for the whole Earth is an ellipsoid (aptly called a "reference ellipsoid"; see google).

Anyhow, back on topic... Yeah, we have a neighbor who is a flat-earther. Nice guy, but wtf?!

I have a globe obsession that he'd probably find quite offensive. To each their own, I guess?
