I don't think you know what you're talking about and are going to do what you're going to do regardless of what anyone says and are looking for validation rather than advice. Have fun acting like an American.
Yes, they don't protect you completely and are MOST useful to prevent you from spreading the disease, but they do also help somewhat to protect you from catching it. I think that's been proven.

And actually I'm not looking for validation, just sharing my experience. Obviously I am going, the ticket has already been booked. Just giving my side of the story.

Btw you guys, I've also been living in Malaysia for the past year and have been going outside of my apartment and being around other people. I've gone to supermarkets numerous times and also I go to restaurants several times per week. Granted, the incidents in Malaysia are far lower than in Europe or the U.S..

The interactions that I have with other people are with masks, hence very low risk of contagion. Air travel is strictly regulated, hence low risk. This is not how people get the virus, they get it by being exposed to unprotected people. This is not what I plan to be doing.

Is all I'm saying.

Whatever useful fiction you gotta weave for yourself

It's not fiction, it's a proven fact, I've been living for the past year in a country where Covid exists, I've gone out of my apartment and interacted with people, I've driven in taxis, commuted to and from work, gone shopping, gone to restaurants, go to the gym, all while respecting the normal protocols, and haven't managed to contract the virus. It's not luck, it's common sense.

It's possible to do things except being quarantined in your apartment safely and unless you have the fortune of home working and/or owning a private vehicle and/or the ability to order all your food to be delivered to your house, you have also interacted with others, presumably safely, and have lived to tell the tale, so let's not be hypocrites please.

You're acting like stepping a foot outside of your home is an automatic death sentence. It's not. :/

Hey look, another fiction.

I was referring to the naive idea that everyone you've interacted with has been responsible and that prolonged periods in a confined space are easily regulated. Shaming you over something that you're going to do anyways isn't my goal.

You lost me. Did I say everyone I interact with is responsible? I don't care if they are as long as they're wearing their mask around me. Which is what my interaction with others is like. Including at work, when I was going to the office. If both parties are wearing masks the risk of infection is minimal.

My point is also that simply existing in a confined space with other people doesn't mean you will catch something, if you are and others are wearing masks. Hence me taking the subway to work for many months during this year and NOT getting infected.

I don't see how changing my mode of transport is suddenly me behaving like a reckless homicidal maniac.

Again, I've posted in this thread what I'm doing, why I'm doing it and why I think it's not very risky behavior, considering all of the other factors and how I live my life in this pandemic usually.

Risky behavior for me is having a rich social life and interacting, unprotected, with many people. This is obviously not how I'm living and not what I plan to do in Europe.

And that's all really.

You implied that, yes.

Don't call yourself a maniac. That said, flights are several hours longer (idk the exact time of your flight though) than a workday commute and locks airborne particulates in the cabin because airplanes have to maintain air pressure. You're significantly more likely to catch or spread it in that circumstance.

I'm contesting the bolded.

True, but it seems like you're drawing this line to excuse your own behaviour rather than to condemn theirs.

You’re lucky to be living in a country that did the hard work upfront. Id ride it out safely there for one more year. I lived one five year stretch without a single visit back the states before but that doesn’t mean it’s the same thing for me as it is for you but I don’t think a couple years is a big deal at all.

Denver’s mayor flies to Mississippi to spend Thanksgiving with his family — after urging others to stay home. He later says he was thinking with “my heart and not my head.” A Pennsylvania mayor bans indoor dining, then eats at a restaurant in Maryland. The governor of Rhode Island is photographed at an indoor wine event as her state faces the nation’s second-highest virus rate.

While people weigh whether it’s safe to go to work or the grocery store, the mayor of Austin, Texas, heads to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on a private jet after hosting a wedding for 20. California’s governor dines at a swanky French restaurant with lobbyists, none wearing masks, a day after San Francisco’s mayor was there for a birthday party. Both had recently imposed tough rules on restaurants, shops and activities to slow the spread of the virus.
We suck.

I don’t care what anyone says being an American is a curse not a privilege. Especially if you’re not a selfish hypocritical *******. Trying to be a decent person here just gets you **** on.

The only idiot that picked up something is my oldest sister who visited a friend WITHOUT A MASK. Incidentally, my youngest sister who was with her at the time (but WITH a mask) also drove her home for a few hours without a mask and DIDN'T catch it. My mother and father were in (limited) contact with my eldest sister and DIDN'T catch it.

So, I get the concern, I have it too, but I honestly think it's not so easy to catch this virus if everyone is following the protocols. Travelling, especially air travel is extremely safe these days so I think the chances of me picking up something and then passing it on to my family or boyfriend are minimal. And this is why I'm ok to travel. :/
One of the countries hardest hit, almost as bad as Italy. I get you.
And what about this new strain in the UK? Who's to say that won't surface in other parts of Europe? Honestly, you're like someone who's living in a neutral country in WWII saying "You know what, I think I'll go see my boyfriend in Germany."

Yes I know, trust me, it's not a decision I came to lightly.
