I've got a bad heart and I had the booster. No side effects at all in my case and when I did the first time around, my heart was the least of my problems (the reaction was mild by the way)

You just sound like you're looking for excuses not to take it. Your last line is totally incorrect: the vaccine was developed before Omicron came on the scene, and now you're not protected against that if you only got the first two shots. If you have a dodgy heart then it's even more important you have the booster, so talk to your doctor unless you think you know better than medical professionals who can advise you what your risk is. Up to you, but I'd say don't be an idiot about it. Self-diagnosis is the worst thing you can do. Reminds me of a line from "One Foot in the Grave", where Victor Meldrew, accused by his wife of being a hypochondriac, looks up some malady and reads "Symptoms: none." Gasps. "That's exactly what I've got!"

I got the vaccine and I got a pretty mild case of it. The vaccine doesn't totally get rid of the chances of you getting it; it just prevents you from contracting a bad case of it. For me it felt like nothing more than a regular winter fever.

Everyone should definitely get the vaccine though. Eventually we'll get this under control enough where we'll probably be getting yearly vaccines for it, just like the flu.

I believe I intimated it was a stupid, not selfish, decision on Norg's part. Given that he has apparently trouble with his heart, and assuming a doctor says it's best to get the shot, then he should get it. At the very least, he should not be making this decision based on his own "hunches" and thereby possibly preventing himself from being able to benefit from its protection, should he end up getting Omicron. It is however selfish in another way, as it has always been, as those who are unvaxxed are helping new variants develop and spread.

Texas scientists’ new Covid-19 vaccine is cheaper, easier to make and patent-free

“We want to do good in the world. This was the right thing to do and this is what we morally had to do. We didn’t even blink. We didn’t think, ‘how can we take advantage of this?’ You see now that if more like us would have been more attuned to how the world is so inequitable and how we could have helped from the beginning so many places around the world without thinking ‘what’s going to be in it for me?’, we could have basically not even seen these variants arise.”

Fair play to them, but his last sentence is either entirely naive or totally disingenuous. No matter who developed the vaccine(s), the variants would still have arisen because in order for a vaccine to be effective, people have to take it, and millions of Americans - and others around the world, even here - refuse to do so. So while I applaud his ethics, his conclusion is based on an entirely false premise. Vaccine uptake is not slow because pharma care more about making money than protecting people (though of course they do), it's slow because people have been fooled into not trusting it, and so no matter who makes it they will still say NO.

And of course, one of the super-hotspot NO areas is... Texas. So the chances of this changing things significantly, in terms of variants, or vaccine trust or uptake, are about as likely as Trump renouncing QAnon. Not gonna happen.

But I repeat: fair play to them. Other pharma companies could learn a lot from them.
