I remember the news about the riots in Northern Ireland. Here, it played as a war between the Catholics and the Protestants mostly though I also heard stuff about British interference as well. Anyway, it's good to hear your take on it, Trolls.

Yes, your view of NI is very interesting, Trollheart. It's a perspective that's not often heard outside Ireland, afaik. I hope I didn't give the impression that I considered the Troubles to be civil war; I was trying to make the point that civil war was NOT the next thing to expect in divided America.

I wonder if you've ever read any of William Trevor's books? He has hundreds of beautifully written short stories, some set in Ireland, though others not. They are often full of quiet nostalgia, and as I once read on the blurb of one of his collections, they are "always true to the human heart."

Well it's about ****ing time. It's a start, at least.

News Alert: US Capitol rioter gets 5 years in jail after throwing fire extinguisher at police

A Florida man who enthusiastically attacked police at the US Capitol on January 6 with a fire extinguisher, a wooden plank and a pole was sentenced to more than five years in prison on Friday, the longest sentence for a Capitol rioter thus far.

The take-away from this interview: If it was another country, the USA would be on its own "High Risk of Political Violence" watch list:-

Glossary:

Quote:
Anocracy or semi-democracy is a form of government that is loosely defined as part democracy and part dictatorship, or as a "regime that mixes democratic with autocratic features." Another definition classifies anocracy as "a regime that permits some means of participation through opposition group behavior but that has incomplete development of mechanisms to redress grievances."

Aren't the vast majority of governments fundamentally anocracies in some aspect or another?

^ Yes, that's probably true, although some are more so than others. Here's a website with countries listed according to an overall democracy rating (= first column in the table). Norway is the "shining beacon on a hill". The UK comes in at #15 and the USA at #24:

Hey, we're a democracy! Someone tell the government (who were not voted in by the majority, long story) - I suppose we don't have any rabid right in politics as we couldn't be got away from the pubs long enough to form one! Slainte!
