What is your take on all kinds of sporting agencies not allowing Russians to compete?

The latest world junior hockey tournament wrapped up a week ago. The Russians weren't allowed to compete. Latvia played in its place, and regularly got smoked like a cheap cigar. Their poor goalies are still being treated for shell shock.

One place where the high road was taken was at Wimbledon. Russians couldn't play, but there were no rankings points to be won.

On one hand, I get why they're being banned. On the other hand, they're not fighting anyone.

I was thinking of Ali, when he said "And shoot them for what? They never called me ______" while trying to avoid the Vietnam war draft.

I'd have to look it up, but I don't remember sport governing bodies banning countries because of a war. Canada boycotted the Moscow games in 1980, but that was a government decision.

It's not to take anything away from the invasion or the suffering. I know it's bad. I know the Ukrainians don't deserve any of it.

I don't follow your reasoning. It's a kind of sanction, a confirmation that the other countries don't agree with what Russia is doing. Do YOU want to hear the Russian national anthem, knowing the war crimes they're perpetrating, knowing they're ****ing SHELLING A NUCLEAR STATION AND PUSHING US ALL TO THE BRINK OF ANNIHILATION? Sure, the athletes, but how many have come out and spoken against the war? Granted, they'd probably end up in Siberia or worse, but you can't allow a country that is basically the 21st century equivalent of Nazi Germany to rub shoulders with the rest of us as if nothing was wrong. The only reason they're "not fighting anyone" is that the NATO countries can't do so directly, but they're certainly supplying arms and equipment, so in all but name. You think the president of Ukraine, Poland, Latvia wants to shake hands with Putin or one of his lackeys? Come on. Seriously.

Interesting you bring up the Olympic boycott, MC. That was actually started by the United States after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. I'm not sure how many countries followed our lead (I'm heartened to know Canada did), but most of the European countries would compete in Moscow in 1980. The Soviets boycotted the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 but it ended up backfiring on them as it was (financially anyway) the most successful Olympics altogether.

Anyway, since we can't go beyond a proxy war with Russia, mostly because of nuclear weapons but also because we really don't want China in the mix, we have to make our stand in other avenues. Keeping Russia off the world stage in sports and entertainment events is just one way to do that.

Cause Republicans said no
They said "listen you Dem ho
The things you want to go
Through congress are just so
Against our right wing flow
As our power has got to grow
And if you we have to throw
Under buses then it's woe
To you and all you'll have to show
For you time here is a slow
Defeat for we say No!"
