This is, quite possibly, the worst and most annoying song ever written.
And then there's Last Christmas by Wham! It might be OK if it weren't so repetitive, but it's so repetitive it's incredibly annoying.

I don't get why some people despise Last Christmas, IMO it's a fine pop tune

To me, it's one of those songs that has no staying power. It sounded OK to me the first couple of times I heard it but got progressively annoying the more I heard it. The song being overplayed during the holidays doesn't help.

The one verse they keep repeating over and over, I mean - c'mon! Surely they could have come up with some different lyrics for the other iterations of the verse. It's like .... Last Christmas, I gave you my heart The very next day, you gave it away This year, to save me from tears, I'll give it to someone special. Last Christmas, I gave you my heart The very next day, you gave it away This year, to save me from tears, I'll give it to someone special. Last Christmas, I gave you my heart The very next day, you gave it away This year, to save me from tears, I'll give it to someone special. Hmmm doesn't strike me as being significantly more repetitive than the average 80s song.
Not to mention, the best music of that era adopted repetitiveness as a key aesthetic principle (not least Joy Division, a band George Michael admired). You know the Three Rs? As in repetition, repetition, repetition? “We dig repetition, Chairman Mao digs repetition, President Carter digs repetition. We dig it. We dig it.”
