I can't help but believe it is related to a psychological disorder of some kind. My dad is not diagnosed but we've long suspected he has a borderline personality disorder. What about your friend?

nah im betting he just isn't into music at all, but is so familiar with PF and the cranberries that its the only thing he considers "good". I doubt its that uncommon really, people tend to stick to what they know, especially as they age.

This might help you out a bit, Miss P. It's got some links to articles and is a pretty good read.

You're slipping. You could have made a more challenging joke than that.

I can't say I personally know anyone who "hates" music, although I know many of them aren't into it as passionately as I am. In other words, they like going to clubs, dancing, etc. and that's about it. They could care less about the history of a particular band or artist. I very much enjoy learning about them any way possible. After all, I don't call myself a "Musicwhore" for nothing ( ...... ) !

I think some people are turned off of music by constantly being around people that are extremely passionate and enthusiastic about music, it annoys them. My roommate and long time close friend claims to not like music, or at least not care about it, but I catch him tapping his foot and singing along all of the time. It seems more like a subconscious choice to distinguish himself from us, to not be seen as a copy cat, because most of my circle of friends are musicians and enthusiastic collectors. I think most people make subconscious decisions to distance themselves from particular cultures that they find annoying, we do it when we buy jean jackets instead of track suits, we do it when we buy Ford pickups instead of PT Cruisers, I imagine it might be something like that. He thinks rabid music fans are annoying so he distances himself from music and music culture.

Yes, I'd recommend reading that.

Shortly afterwards a guy from the Netherlands came by who said he had ^that^ condition, and we had an interesting conversation:

Specific musical anhedonia

I suspect there are differing degrees of the condition, where some people do not respond emotionally to any music at all, while others respond only to very specific types of music or maybe even individual songs.
