Not particually. When an artist comes along that make music that is different and enjoyable i'll like it like The Dirtbombs and more recently Edan. You seem to be the one with the narrow mind claiming people have shitty and boring taste in music when all your last fm listenings pretty much revolve around popular rock music with little of anything else other than the likes of Sufjan Stevens and the like which we all know people with similar tastes as you cream their pants over so it's not unexpected.

An artist gets one play for every person in the group that listens to them. For example, 4 different people listened to Gnarls Barkley this week.

In the 70s we had bands like Journey and Dan Fogelberg, that was bad, in the 80s we had Air Supply and Lionel Ritchie, also pretty bad and in the 90s we had Hootie And The Blowfish and more european novelty techno acts than i can count, so yes, some real crap there... And NOW we have James Blunt, who is so hot now, you know he will inspire a whole bunch of immitators who will cash in on any new trend they can get their hands on, in other words, we're heading for an alltime high in crap this decade.

You can list a whole bunch of indie bands if you want, thats fine by me, there are some difinete good acts (Arcade Fire) but there are a lot of bands who i honestly don't think are worthy of all the praise critics give them, like Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, The Shins, Interpol, TV On The Radio, etc... If these guys really are the saviors of rock, then i am not very optmistic when it comes to the future of music.... Just my take on it.

i couldn't disagree more, i think the music scene is as vibrant as it ever was, and about 10 times as vibrant as it was in the 60's and 70's purely because there's about a million more bands....mind you, i listen to all kinds of music, not just rock....

I think theres a balance of good and bad artists in whatever decade you're in, just as much rubbish as there has ever been.

with the advent of the internet there are too many outlets nowadays for bands to showcase their music, hence we have tenfold the amount of sh!tty bands we used to.

Nah, quantity isn't exactly quality, there are many good bands around, for sure.... And i like a lot of 00s music, but for me, not many modern bands are on par with some of the best bands of the 60s or 70s, regardless of genre... For me, there are just way too many talentless bands out now, not just mainstream bands on MTV and the radio but obscure indie bands too, many modern bands are basically setting a pretty bad example for aspiring musicians, "hey kids, you don't have to know how to play your instruments, how to sing, how to write good lyrics or even know a damn thing about song structure, not anymore, just make a catchy enough chorus and everyone will be downloading it for their ringtone and viola... you're a successful rock band"... Sure we always had bad music, but the crappy bands of the 60s and 70s weren't getting rave reviews from every critic in the world, now critics have lowered their standards so much that they will call any flavor of the month pop group or mediocre Rolling Stones cover band the savior of music, it pisse's me off... I can see bands like Radiohead, The White Stripes and The Mars Volta becoming the Pink Floyds, Led Zeppelins and Black Sabbaths of the future but other than that, music met it's prime in the mid-late 60s, in my opinion.... We're never going to have another Beatles or Rolling Stones ever again, another Blue Oyster Cult maybe, if we're lucky.
