Same, this site has made me a lot more open-minded in my approach to different types of music.

My parents aren't brilliant influences, they've done the typical buy-a-cd-every-year-and-make-it-a-dido-album thing, but back in the day my mum used to play Patti Smith in the car.
Other than that, i just read magazines and look for anyone looks like they have a pinch of charisma

My mom has good taste in music, she got me into classic stuff like the Stones and whatnot, but I found a lot of my music by buying cheap random CDs with cover art I liked and going to local shows and building from there (a local band I like - find their influences, listen to them).

Mom, Dad & my uncles got me into Classic Rock and Pop, grandma got me into R&B and Country, my brother got me into some Metal, Kurt Cobain got me into Alternative Rock and 70s Punk, this weird 40 year old hindu guy I met on the internet got me into Prog, and Prog opened me up to a lot of other genres like Jazz and Classical, even Electronica... I got into Hip Hop via MTV, I got into good Hip hop by trying to see for myself if all Hip Hop sounded like Kris Kross.

Mostly my couzin influenced my taste because he got me into some good metal bands.

Ethan got me into some really good bands as well, like Thursday and Deseperacidos.

I also got into some good bands by right-track because some of the bands he recommended around the boards were pretty good.

My best friend got me into AFI, he got really into them around the Sing the Sorrow era and he got me into them along with himself. They are my favorite band now. The rest was mostly my self browsing through radio channels and listening to rock stations.

My mom's a rocker (Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Blue Oyster Cult, Bob Segar) my brother's a rocker too (Iron Maiden, Primus, Beck, Alice In Chains) and my cousins in Delray, MI are juggalos (ICP, Twiztid, Blaze Ya' Dead Homie, ABK) and I grew up in the generation of Jay Z, Static-X, Hed, Busta Rhymes, and had a redneck father and family so toss in some Alan Jackson, Toby Kieth, and what not.

What an excellent question. Friends, mostly. But I've always been expermental with music -- willing to take chances.

In high school I was into Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest -- basically metal and classic rock.

I was in college through the mid to late 80s -- R.E.M., U2, Talking Heads, and the whole new wave and alternative wave. Went through a big punk phase -- Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Clash, etc...

I've been into the grunge scene -- Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, etc...

Bands I like now: Rage Against the Machine, Coldplay, Doors, Led Zep, Nickelback, Collective Soul, Filter, etc., etc.

I'm also into jazz -- Coltrane, Davis, Acid Jazz...
